What your tongue say about you

When it comes to our health, our bodies have a way of telling us a thing or two about our overall health in subtle ways. One of those ways is through the tongue. The tongue has always been helpful for physicians in making a diagnosis, especially for conditions like hepatitis C, IBS, and other problems.

A healthy person’s tongue should simply look pink, clean, and covered with small bumps that help us taste things. If your tongue appears white, red, or black, it could mean something’s wrong with your health.

DO WE REALLY NEED FEMININE HYGIENE PRODUCTS?

DO WE REALLY NEED FEMININE HYGIENE PRODUCTS?

Do we really need to use feminine hygiene products to keep us fresh 'down there'? This gynaecologist doesn't think so...

Feminine hygiene products like vaginal washes, wipes and sprays that aim to help with odours and keep you feeling fresh, have been called into question after a top gynaecologist has claimed they simply prey on women's insecurities.

Talking to The Daily Mail, consultant and senior lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at St George's hospital in London, Austin Ugwumadu, said, 'The advertising and packaging of feminine hygiene products play on the impression that women need to be squeaky-clean - otherwise they'll be more at risk of infection.'

'In fact, the opposite is true. The vagina is a perfectly-balanced ecosystem, and the bacteria there play a crucial role in gynaecological health.'

Austin was keen to separate these kinds of products from medical ones however, noting that treatments for conditions such as thrush and bacterial vaginosis still have their place.

'In my view, these new feminine hygiene products just worsen women's anxiety about their bodies, and are probably a waste of money,' he added.

'Over millions of years, this part of the body has adapted its own highly-effective cleaning process. As long as you're showering every day and wearing clean, preferably non-synthetic underwear, this should be enough.'

Stress relieve technique

On a recent television show about healthy living on Russian national television, a doctor of medical science and psychiatry, Mark Sandomirsky, advised his patients to relieve stress using this easy technique.
The source of stress often varies and people almost always experience it in different ways. Once the stress sets in, most people however, are left feeling uncomfortable and anxious, followed by a sensation of heaviness or even pain in parts of the body.
The first step to releasing stress is to rid yourself of the the negative emotions. Don’t bottle them up within yourself. After doing so, next is to remove the physical effects of the stress. This is where the psycho-reflexology comes into play. Our body has certain anti-stress points and all that needs to be done is simply massage these points to relieve the stress.
The ancient Chinese referred to this point as Shen Men or “The Gate of Heaven.” Shen Men is a anti-stress point that decreases stress, boosts energy flow, and strengthens the overall health of the body.
This acupressure point also reduces inflammation and can relieve pain in almost every part of the body. Massaging the Shen Men point will relieve stress and is located in the centre of the upper third of the ear.

Dr Sandomirsky advices:
Using a cotton bud press this point and gently massage it. Breathe deeply.
Then listen to your body carefully.
Keep breathing deeply.
When you inhale look to the left, and on the exhale look to the right.
You will feel how your body calms down.

Extra tips:
Massage this point using your fingers.
Massage it well every time you are stressed.
You can also repeat this technique every night before you go to bed.

You Throw Away Eggshells? After Reading This Article You Will Never Do That Again!

egg shellsCalcium is very important in keeping the body functioning properly. Some of calciums main functions are creating bone mass and preventing osteoporosis, but calcium also helps normalize the function of nerves and muscles, helps regulate your heartbeat, helps you sleep, and helps promotes healthy skin and hair. It is also important in immunological activity of cells.

There are numerous factors that can reduce the calcium level in your body. Things like too much sitting, excessive coffee, alcohol consumption and carbonated beverages can all lower your body's calcium level. Women that are pregnant, women in menopause, men over the age of 50, and people suffering from digestive disorders are especially prone to calcium deficiency. Also, eggshells are especially beneficial for children because of their body's formation of bone tissue.

An eggshell contains over 90 percent calcium and is a natural source of 27 different minerals (such as: magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sodium, potassium, iron, sulfur, aluminum). The composition of eggshells resembles our teeth and bones, which makes it easy for the body to absorb. Also the protein of a shell is composed of such essential amino acids as methionine, cysteine, lysine, isoleucine. This makes eggshells an effective natural means to obtain calcium.

Moreover eggshells also contain iron, copper, manganese, zinc, fluorine, phosphorus, chromium and molybdenum. This is another reason why eggshells are a great way to add calcium to your body. The recommended daily dose is 1.5 to 3 grams of crushed shells.

Studies also showed accelerated healing when using eggshells for treating such orthopedic diseases as congenital dislocation of a hip or osteoporosis. When using eggshells for medicinal purposes it is important to use organic eggs to avoid any chemicals or antibiotics. Increasing the amount of eggshell calcium consumed can not only help treat a calcium deficiency and osteoporosis, but it can help with high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Additionally, eggshells can help with the production of blood cells.

Cleanse your blood and strengthen your system
Wash and crush 5 eggshells into a fine powder. Mix the crushed eggshell powder into 10½ cups of water. Let the mixture stand in the refrigerator for 7 days prior to consumption. Drink 2 glasses of this mixture per day. If you would like to add some extra flavor to it you can add a few drops of fresh lemon juice to each glass. Store the mixture in the refrigerator.

Use eggshells to Treat Gastritis and Ulcer
Wash and crush 2 eggshells. Add 3 teaspoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice and when the shells are softened, add about ½ a cup of hot milk. Consume the remedy two times per day. Consume it once in the morning after you wake up and once at night right before you go to bed. For the best results, try not to eat or drink anything before taking the remedy.

Use eggshells to treat Cavities
Eggshells provide the necessary amount of calcium to remineralize your teeth. Take about 8 to 10 eggshells and boil them for approximately 5 minutes. This will help remove any unwanted bacteria or pathogens from the eggshells. After boiling the eggshells let them air dry. Next, grind the eggshells into a fine powder (a coffee grinder works great for this). Take ½ teaspoon per day of the powder. It is not important how you ingest the eggshells, but that you ingest the eggshells. This means you can add it to your favorite smoothie or juice, mix with water for a quick ingestion or sprinkle into your meal!

9 Ways to Transform a Tie into a Stunning Knot!

Main Image

James Bond famously distrusted any man with a Windsor knot. For him, it was too symmetrical, showing vanity and selfishness. Well, today, we're going to make Bond go nuts because there are some beautiful and intricate tie knots out there that require a little hand dexterity and patience before they can be executed. If Bond didn't like Windsors, imagine what he would say about an Eldredge! Never fear, though, because there are incredibly simple and functional knots here as well such as the Pratt.

6 Cancer Causers at Home You Should Get Rid Of

We have grown to believe that our home is our castle. But things have changed long ago and nowadays our homes might be hiding more danger than safety. Indeed quite a lot information has been shared about the infamous formaldehyde, nitrobenzene and methylene chloride - all carcinogens that can be found in everyday items such as rubber, plastic, dyes, perfumes, shampoos.

Take a look at a few of the items you thought harmless and see the health problems they can provoke. Then make sure you take the right decision and rid your home of many cancer-causers and ensure a healthy environment for you and your family.

1. Air fresheners

Many air fresheners have carcinogens, volatile organic compounds and toxins such as phthalate esters in their formulas. A Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) study of 13 common household air fresheners found that most of the surveyed products contain chemicals that can aggravate asthma and affect reproductive development.

According to a 2008 study by Anne Steinemann of the University of Washington, all air-fresheners tested gave off chemicals regulated as toxic or hazardous under federal laws, including carcinogens with no safe exposure level. None of these chemicals, however, were listed on the product labels or Material Safety Data Sheets. As a replacement, try natural fragrances from essential oils.

2. Candles

According to a study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), 40 percent of candles on the market contain lead wires inside their wicks. Scented candles most commonly contain lead wicks. Fragrance oils soften the wax, so the manufacturers use lead to make the wicks firmer.

A candle with a lead-core wick releases five times the amount of lead considered hazardous for children and exceeds Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) pollution standards for outdoor air, says the CPSC. Exposure to high amounts oflead may contribute to hormone disruption, behavioral problems, learning disabilities, and many other health problems.

If you want to keep your home softly lit and cozy without risking your health go for beeswax candles with cotton wicks. For more information on how to make your own beeswax candles read How to Make Beeswax Candles.

3. Art supplies

Certain art supplies like Epoxy and rubber cement glues, acrylic paints and solvents, and permanent markers contain chemicals linked to allergies, organ damage, and cancer.

Children are particularly vulnerable to toxins because of their higher metabolisms, and immature immune systems, so it pays to exercise extra care with the products they use. To find nontoxic and green alternatives to common art supplies, or recipes for making your own, read Are Art Supplies Toxic?

4. Shampoos

Unlikely as it may sound, conventional shampoos have too many toxic ingredients. Funny as it may sound, their effects are still being researched, and there is no scientific consensus whether they cause cancer. But if you want to be on the safe side, you can use any of the myriad of handmade shampoo bars, offered on etsy.

5. Antiperspirants

Most conventional deodorants and antiperspirants contain several ingredients linked to virulent cancers. Since deodorants and antiperspirants are designed to stay on our bodies for hours, this allows the potential absorption of harmful chemicals through the skin. After I read this article on Green Living Ideas I completely stopped using antiperspirants but am yet to write an extensive post about that.

6. Shower curtains

Plastic shower curtains leach toxic chemicals not only into your shower or bath, but also into the environment, emitting harmful chemicals calledvolatile organic chemicals or VOCs.

Reducing your contact with any of these products, in addition to conventional cleaners, will surely make your home your castle.

Colon Cancer Risks, Symptoms, and Prevention

How to prevent colon cancer

Colon Cancer Risks, Symptoms, and Prevention

Your digestive system plays a critical role in processing nutrients and removing harmful toxins from your body.  It’s composed of the large and small intestines, stomach, and esophagus.

The upper portion of the large intestine is referred to as the colon while the lower portions are known as the rectum and anal canal.  Cancers of these areas of the body are sometimes referred to jointly colorectal cancers.

Overall, slightly more men than women are diagnosed with colorectal cancers but the lifetime risk is approximately 5% or 1-in-20 people.

Colon cancer occurs when damaged cells develop in colon tissues.  These are called polyps and the majority start out benign (non-cancerous).  Left untreated, these small clumps may turn cancerous.  Several factors increase your chances of contracting colorectal cancers.

Risk Factors for Colon Cancer

  • Age – approximately 90% of patients diagnosed are older than age 50
  • Common hereditary diseases such as hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer and familial adenomatous polyposis
  • Personal history of adenomatous polyps in the colon or colorectal cancer
  • Immediate family history of colon cancer, polyps, or rectal cancer
  • History of chronic inflammatory conditions such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn disease
  • If you are diabetic or insulin resistant
  • Alcohol and tobacco use
  • If you are obese, you have a higher risk of contracting colon cancer – as well as a lower chance of survival
  • Poor diet of high “bad” fats, high processed carbs, and low fiber
  • Lack of exercise

The appearance and severity of symptoms depend on the location and size of the cancer mass.  Many patients diagnosed with colon cancer do not experience symptoms at first.  Early screening is the most important thing to remember when it comes to treating and beating colon cancer.

Symptoms of Colon Cancer

  • Changes in bowel movements, such as constipation or diarrhea
  • Bloody stool or bleeding from the rectum
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Cramps, bloating, and gas pains
  • Feeling as if your bowel is never emptied
  • Feelings of fatigue or overall weakness

Colorectal cancers are the third most often diagnosed form of cancer for both genders.  It is also the secon highest form of cancer that results in death for both genders.

In 2014, experts estimate that more than 135,000 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed.  Of those patients, more than 50,000 are not expected to survive.

This form of cancer is one that patients don’t like to discuss due to embarrassment (due to the area of the body) and fear of the tests done to confirm.

There is no reason to be embarrassed about feeling sick.  Hopefully, you have a good relationship with your doctor and will admit to symptoms – no matter where or what they involve.

Common Tests for Colon Cancer

  • Colonoscopy and Sigmoidoscopy:  This is a procedure in which a tube-like device is inserted to view any abnormal cells.  It is also used to take tissue samples. One of the big problems with these types of procedures is that they may actually increase cancer mortality. For instance, the Telemark Polyp Study I demonstrated a 157% increase in mortality among patients who had previously had a colonoscopy.  In addition, removing polyps or even doing biopsies releases cancer cells into the bloodstream and the colon’s lumen. In turn, these cells may seed all other cancers throughout the body. Lastly, the average age for colorectal cancer diagnosis is 72. Commencing invasive screening and polypectomies in asymptomatic people at age 50 is just as absurd as taking contraceptives after menopause.

NCI-Regular_colonoscopy

  • Rectal Exam:  A gloved and lubricated finger is inserted to check for lumps.
  • Fecal Occult Blood Test:  Samples of the stool are taken from the patient for laboratory testing to determine if there is blood in the stool.
  • Barium Enema:  Barium is inserted into the lower intestine to coat all surfaces.  Then X-rays are taken to determine the presence of cancer.

Anti-Colon-Cancer Foods

The chief issue that is typically overlooked is how to prevent (and even treat) colon cancer with certain foods. According to the NCI “Fact Sheet on Garlic and Cancer Prevention,” garlic consumption may reduce the risk of developing colon cancer.  Protective effects from garlic may arise from its antibacterial properties or from its ability to block the formation and/or halt the activation of cancer-causing substances, enhance repair, reduce cell proliferation, or induce cell death (apoptosis). Garlic is high in the minerals sulfur and selenium as well as plant chemicals such as allicilin and flavonoids, all known to be beneficial to health.

Eating a rainbow of plant antioxidants is another strategy to prevent colon cancer. Foods and herbs like kale, avocado, carrots, blueberries, apricots, cantaloupe, grapes, oregano, ginger, rosemary, turmeric, cabbage, broccoli, and other fruits and vegetables help to decrease inflammation and oxidation while protecting against colon cancer.

Selenium rich foods like brazil nuts, salmon, sunflower seeds, mushrooms, garlic and onions have also been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Fish oil and other omega-3 oils (EPA and DHA) are very anti-inflammatory and can help prevent the proliferation of cancer cells throughout the body.  Numerous studies have shown that several species of  ginseng root decrease growth and proliferation of colon cancer cells, cause apoptosis, and act as potent protective anti-cancer anti-oxidant.

The Only 2 Yoga Poses You Need For Mental & Physical Balance

In our increasingly busy world, where the many things pulling our attention are seemingly never-ending, we have limited time to do a practice to keep ourselves healthy and balanced both spiritually and physically. So rather than ask you to add one more thing to your already busy lives, I propose following the adage of working "smarter not harder."

I start every personal yoga practice with a squat and a hang.

These are power poses — essential poses to do even if you're not going to do anything else; they are the poses that give you the most bang for your buck.

One of the predictors of longevity is how easy it is to sit down on the ground and stand up again without assistance. The squat and hang poses are great ways to practice these important physical movements.

Many yoga poses are simply variations on the squat or the hang. A squat is a compression and the hang is an extension. They are yin and yang movements that complement each other.

Why Squat?

Squat Pose (Malasana) helps us keep a deep and fluid flexibility in the hip joints. This flexibility is something we all have at birth, but diminishes as we age due to lack of use. The hip joints have been called the holders of emotions and they are also where sexual energy resides. A hip joint that is flexible is able to move easily and release emotions, instead of keeping them locked into non-beneficial energetic patterns within the body.

Also, having supple hip joints is crucial to the proper alignment of the body when we are walking and standing. In our culture we spend far too much time sitting in chairs or in our cars and leaning forward. These postures shorten and tighten muscles in our legs (the hamstrings and Achilles tendons) and in our shoulders, necks and backs. The tendency for the upper back and neck to be out of alignment, can be directly related to headaches, rapid aging and even bone deterioration.

Our internal organs need room to move and breathe, and how young our body stays, especially internally, can be directly related to the mobility and motility of our organs — the ability of the organs to move easily, bending and compressing as we move, and to have a healthy fluid flow within and around themselves, which helps our organs retain their elasticity. The squatting position helps to reinforce the inherent mobility and motility of organs.

Why Hang?

The hang aka, Forward Bend (Uttanasana) is about lengthening and loosening the back of the body — the hamstrings especially — but also the often-tight low back muscles and shoulder girdle. Hanging the torso over is also an inversion, and will start to get the body used to being turned upside down — something most of us stop doing after we pass cartwheel age.

Allowing the body to extend in this way takes pressure off the vertebrae and allows the spine to lengthen without compression. This also gets us ready for backbending poses, where we are lengthening the spine — but also compressing it instead of lengthening and opening between the vertebrae. Hanging allows the muscles of the legs and hips to stretch, while at the same starting to strengthen them. It's also calming to the nervous system. In succession with the squat, it helps to free the hips, calm the mind and strengthen the lower body.

Beauty: 6 Amazing Benefits of Skin Icing

Skin icing is one of the most popular modern beauty rituals and it contributes to better looking skin. Beauty experts have long used this therapy in spas and skin care treatments, thanks to its wide range of benefits.

Korean women are known for their detailed beauty rituals and skin icing is a regular technique in their skin care treatments.

6-amazing-benefits-of-skin-icing

Health experts believe that skin icing is able to:

  • Refresh the face
  • Prevent the formation of wrinkles
  • Fight acne and blemishes
  • Improve blood circulation and give the skin a healthy complexion

We have listed more benefits provided by this morning and evening ritual:

1. Smoother Skin

Skin icing tightens skin and shrinks enlarged pores by unclogging the pores that look larger because of excess sebum and debris. Skin icing tones face skin and makes it look smooth.

2. Pore Primer

Skin icing is a cheap skin toner and works great when applied before makeup. It minimizes the pores underneath the makeup, and the foundation looks smooth and flawless. Try icing your face and then apply your primer.

3. Improves Circulation

Skin icing improves blood circulation. Ice constricts blood vessels and less blood goes to the skin surface. This is great in cases of inflammation or swelling. The body responds to the cold treatment and sends an increased flow of warm blood to the treated area.

4. Great For Puffy Eyes

Skin icing reduces swellings, and thus reduces the bags under your eyes.

5. Wrinkle Buster

Icing eases the signs of wrinkles and slows the creation of new wrinkles.

6. Control Blemishes

Skin icing reduces swelling and redness, so it is great for pimples. The ice also soothes irritation.

Apply the skin icing technique once you notice a new pimple and it will slow the inflammation. This will help you reduce the size and number of blemishes. Hold an ice cube on the acne for several seconds, or until it feels a little numb. Repeat the technique every other night.

Skin icing does not require any special effort. Do it in the morning and/or evening. Follow these instructions:

1. First, cleanse your face thoroughly.

2. Wrap one or two ice cubes in a gauze or any other kind of soft cloth.

3. When the ice starts melting and dampens the cloth, apply it to the face.

4. Hold it on different areas on the face for 1-2 minutes.

5. Move the ice gently using circular movements. Go up along the chin and the jaw line, up the cheeks, and along the forehead and nose. Take special care for the area underneath your eyes.

6. Finish with toner, acne treatment or moisturizer.

Note:

  1. Skin icing is often applied without covering the ice cubes. If that is your choice as well, make sure you wear gloves because you will not be able to hold the ice for long if you do it with bare hands.
  2. Do not worry if you cannot use ice directly on the skin. The same effect can be achieved when holding the cubes with a soft cloth.
  3. If you still decide to use bare ice, do not apply it straight from the freezer, as it can break the capillaries under the skin.
  4. Avoid using ice if you already have broken capillaries and do not use it for too long.
  5. Stop the treatment if you feel uncomfortable. The icing should not be applied for more than 15 minutes.
  6. For better results, add come lemon, rosewater, green tea, cucumber, chamomile tea, and other skin-friendly ingredients to the water for the ice cubes, depending on your skin type.
